James Duddridge MP: GM Crops

JAMES DUDDRIDGE MP

HOUSE OF COMMONS
LONDON SW1A 0AA

Mr Denis Walker

Our ref: RSE8241

3rd October 2007

Dear Mr Walker

Thank you for your card about the growing of GM crops in the UK.

I understand your point of view. I have always been a firm believer in consumer choice and that all foods containing GM material should be clearly labelled as such.

People must be free to purchase non-GM foods if they wish. I am concerned that the Government is being needlessly lax. As things stand, it will be possible for products – even organic products – containing up to 0.9 per cent GM material to be sold without the purchaser being told. It is scientifically established that the presence of GM can be traced down to, or close to, 0.1 per cent and Conservatives believe that this should be the trigger point for GM labelling.

You may be aware that in June, my colleague and Shadow Secretary of State for DEFRA, Peter Ainsworth MP, wrote a letter to David Miliban, the then Secretary of State for DEFRA, asking him to clarify the Government’s position on levels of GM contamination. Conservatives have also tabled an Early Day Motion on the issue.

As requested, I have forwarded your letter to the Secretary of State for DEFRA, Hilary Benn, for his comments. I will, of course, forward you any response I receive.

Once again, thank you very much for writing to me.

Yours sincerely
