Environmental impacts of Trident Replacement

Statement from SEEFoE for CND meeting of 7th March

  1. Diversion of public attention from real needs in society. Mr Blair's confused mind is sowing confusion
  2. Diversion of huge amounts of funds from a limited budget
    1. funds that should be invested in developing alternative energy sources
    2. grants for micro energy generators for consumers, etc. currently capped at £500000/month by DTI - saying it can't give grants to every household
    3. funds to bring older houses to higher insulation values (as in Germany where they do this)
    4. funding for schemes for cycle lanes, trams and extra rail tracks (compare France, Spain and Germany) Without more govt input there's no chance of Mr Blair's targets on CO2 emissions being met
  3. The use of skills, knowledge, research facilities + attached salaries that could be employed in providing fresh answers to global warming
  4. The energy and material costs of developing manufacturing and servicing the weapons, launch and control systems could be used elsewhere
  5. The message that the NPT is dead and the demoralising effect this has on the UK and indeed world population simultaneously as it gives a strong signal to signatories and non-signatories alike to develop weapons of their own again diverting the world's attention away from dealing with global warming issues
  6. The ongoing risks attached to accidents, terrorism and the nuclear waste issues
  7. The environmental damage resulting from a launch.
